Lower bound of structural damage to achieve practical identifiability of nonlinear models in seismic structural health monitoring

Abstract This paper examines the effect of structural damage on practical/computational identifiability parameters that define nonlinear models building structures subjected to earthquake‐induced base motions. The objective is determine level physical expected successfully estimate restoring force models. For this purpose, analyses aim if a hysteretic (Bouc‐Wen type) model can be identified within predefined accuracy from accelerations measured during seismic events cause minor damage. then interrogated it provide accurate predictions response and experienced strong ground motions moderate‐to‐severe adopted Park–Ang type unscented Kalman filter used for parameter estimation. results are verified using simulated two‐dimensional validated experimental data large‐scale shake table test.
